CBSE affiliation is a formal grant that authorises a school to present students for Board examinations. Applications are made online through the SARAS 6.0 portal under categories such as Fresh Affiliation, Upgradation, Extension, and Switch-over. CBSE opens and announces the session-wise application window by notification, and expects schools to follow the current SARAS Manual.

At a high level, schools complete KYC and registration, fill Parts A–C of the online form, upload prescribed documents, pay fees, undergo scrutiny and inspection as directed, address any deficiencies, and then receive the Board’s decision through SARAS. Existing schools must ensure OASIS data is current and the SQAAF self-assessment is completed within the stated window. Inspection modes and timelines are notified by CBSE.

CBSE evaluates governance, land and infrastructure, staffing, safety, and statutory compliance. Minimum land norms are 8,000 sq m in general, with moderated thresholds of 6,000 sq m or 4,000 sq m for specified urban, hilly, North-Eastern, Jammu & Kashmir, and NCR contexts. Infrastructure norms cover classroom sizes, labs, library, computers, and cyber-safety provisions.
